Establish an exclusion area

Assessed in MT-3222 Automatic Radar Plotting Aids (ARPA)

Condition

On an operational ARPA that meet the standards of 33 CFR 164.38 (or an ARPA simulator that meets applicable national and international performance standards for ARPA), with the ARPA on the 12 mile scale, and in automatic acquisition.

Performance Requirements

Behavior Standard
The student will: During assessment, the student shall, at a minimum:

Establish an exclusion area that suppresses the automatic acquisition of targets in that area.

The candidate will establish within 2 minutes an exclusion area on the either side of the vessel that is either described by an arc of 90° on the appropriate side of the vessel, or described by a line parallel to the vessel's track four miles from the vessel.

Use of radar and ARPA to maintain safety of navigation

A3.4 Ability to operate and to interpret and analyze information obtained from ARPA, including:

  1. system performance and accuracy, tracking capabilities and limitations, and processing delays
  2. use of operational warnings and system tests
  3. methods of target acquisition and their limitations
  4. true and relative vectors, graphic representation of target information and danger areas
  5. deriving and analysing information, critical echoes, exclusion areas and trial manoeuvres
