Manual target acquisition

Assessed in MT-3222 Automatic Radar Plotting Aids (ARPA)

Condition

On an operational ARPA that meet the standards of 33 CFR 164.38 (or an ARPA simulator that meets applicable national and international performance standards for ARPA), with at least 10 targets on the selected range.

Performance Requirements

Behavior Standard
The student will: During assessment, the student shall, at a minimum:

Manually acquire ten targets.

Manually acquire 10 targets within 2 minutes.

Supports Table A-II/1 officer in charge of a navigation watch

Competence Knowledge, Understanding & Proficiency Task

Use of radar and ARPA to maintain safety of navigation

A3.4 Ability to operate and to interpret and analyze information obtained from ARPA, including:

  1. system performance and accuracy, tracking capabilities and limitations, and processing delays
  2. use of operational warnings and system tests
  3. methods of target acquisition and their limitations
  4. true and relative vectors, graphic representation of target information and danger areas
  5. deriving and analysing information, critical echoes, exclusion areas and trial manoeuvres
