Plot the ship’s DR position

Assessed in MT-2121 Deep Sea Navigation

Condition

On a ship underway or under laboratory conditions, and using a plotting sheet or chart, given the vessel's speed and course made good for the past four hours.

Performance Requirements

Behavior Standard
The student will: During assessment, the student shall, at a minimum:

Plot the ship’s DR position for every hour (or more frequently if required) for the duration of the watch.

The position is within ± 1 nm of the assessor’s position.

Supports Table A-II/1 officer in charge of a navigation watch

Plan and conduct a passage and determine position

A1.02 Terrestrial and coastal navigation

Ability to determine the ship’s position by use of:

  1. landmarks
  2. aids to navigation, including lighthouses, beacons and buoys
  3. dead reckoning, taking into account winds, tides, currents and estimated speed
