Fix by tangent bearings of two identified objects

Condition

On an operational marine radar or a radar simulator that meets applicable national and international performance standards, with land and buoys displayed, and given a chart with a scale of no more than 1: 80,000.

Performance Requirements

Behavior Standard
The student will: During assessment, the student shall, at a minimum:

Determine two or more tangent bearings measured from identified-charted objects or points of land and plot them.

The position is within ± 0.5 nm of the assessor’s position.

Supports Table A-II/1 officer in charge of a navigation watch

Plan and conduct a passage and determine position

A1.02 Terrestrial and coastal navigation

Ability to determine the ship’s position by use of:

  1. landmarks
  2. aids to navigation, including lighthouses, beacons and buoys
  3. dead reckoning, taking into account winds, tides, currents and estimated speed
