Course Description

Second component of training for Basic and Advanced Firefighting certification (Table A-VI-3). Instruction in fire behavior, fire attacks, personal protective equipment and fire fighting equipment on ship. Practical training at the Barnstable training site.

This course consists of two hour lecture, and 8-hour practical.

Entrance requirements

Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF) is available to any student who has completed Basic Fire Fighting.

STCW Objectives

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the following STCW elements:

  • AFF-X1.02 Use of water for fire-extinguishing, the effect on ship stability, precautions and corrective procedures
  • AFF-X1.03 Communication and coordination during fire-fighting operations
  • AFF-X1.04 Ventilation control, including smoke extraction
  • AFF-X1.05 Control of fuel and electrical systems
  • AFF-X1.06 Fire-fighting process hazards (dry distillation, chemical reactions, boiler uptake fires, etc.)
  • AFF-X1.09 Management and control of injured persons

Demonstrate proficiency in the following skills:

  • FF-4FGF Extinguish a flammable gas fire
  • FF-4PCF Extinguish a petrochemical fire
  • FF-4SF Extinguish a smoldering fire

  • Learns the principles of fire attack.
  • Learns the basic principles of command, control, communication, and coordination of fire teams.
  • Learns the importance of using system shut-downs and ventilation in firefighting.
  • Applies the principles of fire attack to extinguishing a smoldering fire in an enclosed space.
  • Applies the principles of fire attack to extinguishing a petrochemical fire.
  • Applies the principles of fire attack to extinguishing flammable gas fire.
  • Demonstrates the proper donning of SCBA, including changing bottles.
