Operation of an EPIRB

MMA Method

In order to satisfy NVIC 04-14 Task 4.1.A , MMA students must:

Use locating devices, including communication and signaling apparatus and pyrotechnics

SCRB-X4.1 Radio life-saving appliances carried in survival craft, including satellite EPIRBs and SARTs
Condition Behavior Standard

On board a ship, in an approved or accepted course, or in a laboratory, using an unpowered or disabled EPIRB,

the candidate demonstrates proper operation of the EPIRB.


BOTH The assessment is for both PSC and PSC-Limited.

The candidate:

  1. Performs the operations needed to manually activate the EPIRB; and
  2. Describes the indicators that would be activated to indicate that the EPIRB is operating.

NOTE: If the EPIRB has been placed into a test mode for this demonstration, the candidate will also describe the procedure to return the EPIRB back into service.
