ABD-C2.1 Working knowledge of safe working practices and personal shipboard safety, including mechanical safety

Condition Behavior Standard

On board ship or in a laboratory, when questioned by a Qualified Assessor,

the candidate describes the hazards of shipboard equipment and the reasons for guards and safety features.


The candidate’s description includes:

  1. Hazards that exist;
  2. Whether safety guards or devices be removed or not used;
  3. Procedures to minimize the hazards, including;

    a. Portable tools;

    b. Hand tools;

    c. Machinery;

    d. Galley equipment;

    e. Low clearance areas;

    f. Cargo securing gear;

    g. Line handling;

    h. Unsecured material;

    i. High noise areas;

    j. High heat or cold areas (burn or freezing hazards); and

    k. Visibility hazards
