OICEW-A4.3 Preparation, operation, fault detection and necessary measures to prevent damage for the following machinery items and control systems

Steam boiler and associated auxiliaries and steam systems

Condition Behavior Standard

On a steam vessel of at least 1,000 HP, on a simulator, or in a laboratory,

the candidate doses and seeks to control the boiler water quality by:

  • Continuous blow;
  • Bottom blow; and
  • Chemical dosing following recommendations of the vessel’s boiler-water treatment vendor.


Note 1

A candidate who does not perform this task will receive an endorsement that is not valid for steam vessels.

On a daily basis, for no less than a 2-week period, the candidate:

  1. Identifies which corrective actions associated with the results of chemical testing are applicable;

  2. Correctly identifies the type and quantity of chemicals to be used to treat the boiler;

  3. Adds appropriate chemicals to the boiler water while underway; and

  4. Performs dosing and controls, observing all safety and environmental practices and procedures.

MMA Method

In order to satisfy NVIC 17-14 Task 4.3.K , MMA students must:

  • Successfully complete MMA Assessment OICEW-5-2D Test and treat boiler water
