Course Description
Studies diesel engine systems and various methods of application. Engine operation, installation, and maintenance are also considered, as well as diesel engine drive trains and torque conversion. The lab is divided between shipboard systems and the diesel lab ashore. [Lab time required]
This course consists of three 1-hour classes a week for a semester, six 6-hour labs with practical assessments, and a comprehensive final exam.
Entrance requirements
- Successful completion of EN‑2232.
STCW Objectives
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the following STCW elements:
- OICEW-A4.2 Safety and emergency procedures for operation of propulsion plant control systems
- OICEW-A4.3 Preparation, operation, fault detection and measures to prevent damage for main engine and associated auxiliaries
- OICEW-B1.2 Main propulsion plant operational control systems
Demonstrate proficiency in the following skills:
- OICEW-7-1A Start emergency generator
- OICEW-7-1B Inspect and start a diesel engine
- OICEW-7E5C Test engine shutdown devices
- OICEW-8E3A Clean an oil purifier
