Take up on a gate/globe valve stuffing-box gland

In order to satisfy NVIC 07-14 Task 1.2.E , MMA students must:

STCW Competence	Knowledge, Understanding, and Proficiency
Carry out a watch routine appropriate to the duties of a rating forming part of an engine-room watch.	RFPEW-A1.3 Safe working practices as related to engine-room operations

Condition	Behavior	Standard
On a vessel, or in a laboratory,	the candidate takes up on a gate or globe valve stuffing- box gland. All The assessment applies to all RFPEW endorsements.	The candidate: Determines the need to take up on the gate or globe stuffing-box glands; Checks for bent or scored stem; Checks the valve for ease of operation, ensuring that it is a candidate for taking up on the gland without the necessity of adding packing or re-packing of the valve; Checks the position of the gland to determine if it may be further tightened; Tightens alternately each gland nut slightly and evenly until the stem-to-bonnet leakage ceases; Inspects the gland to insure that it is square; and Checks the valve for ease of operation ensuring that the operation is not unacceptably difficult.
