Update 1/7/00

WE'RE READY TO GO!

Capt. Bushy 2: Captian Tom Bushy on the Bridge of the Empire State, alongside in Buzzards Bay. MMA's new training ship, Cape Bon, is in the background. Capt Tom Bushy, Master of the Empire State, on the port bridge wing.

The Empire State passed the rigorous U.S. Coast Guard drills this morning. Two simulated fires , one in the engine room, left the "At Sea Fire Party" tired and sweaty but happy to have impressed the 8 USCG examiners. The abandon ship drill, where the boats are lowered and the musters of the 486 cadets and 85 officers and crew are checked, also went without a problem.

By early afternoon, all gear was aboard and stowed for sea. The only remaining item was final loading of the last of the food stores for the voyage. Fresh milk and vegtables in the large trailer truck fairly flew out off the truck and onto the ship when the cadets learned that liberty would be granted as soon as the job was finished. By 1500, cadets were swarming ashore to sample the last of what Buzzards Bay might have to offer... and to do a run to Wal-mart for last minute essentials.("Did you remember sun tan lotion?... No?... Where are you gonna' get it in January in New England?") Freshmen were walking about wide-eyed with the knowledge that it would be eight days before they would again tread terra firma. Upperclass cadets smugly breezed by, barely hiding their own apprehension about the impending adventure. Tomorrow would be the day!
