Update 1/4/2000

Work, Work, Work

lifeboat: Professor Bob McMurray and cadets do preventative maintenance on the motor of the number 1 lifeboat on the Empire State.

Professor Bob McMurray works with two cadets on routine maintenance on the number one lifeboat aboard Empire State.

Today was filled with musters and movement. The cadets have all moved their personal gear aboard ship and have re-familiarized themselves with the Empire State. They have been counted and re-counted as the muster lists for the 497 cadets and 73 officers/staff/crew are finalized. At dawn, 4 large trailer trucks filled with provisions for the voyage were sitting dockside, their diesel engines idiling, waiting for the cadets to unload the contents. The campus was criss-crossed with groups of cadets pushing dollies overflowing with computer gear and driving pick-ups filled with classroom equipment; all paths converging on the big white ship on the dock.

LoadCrackers: Loading Stores 1/4/00

Loading crackers through the port sideport using the "bucket brigade" method.

Tomorrow will bring more work and more trucks, but the comfort level of the cadets will climb after spending a few nights aboard ship. Tomorrow will also start the anxiety building for getting underway Saturday. We will be halfway through the difficult loading/fam period and less than 72 hours to sailing.
