OICEW-C1.7 Use of various types of sealants and packings

Condition Behavior Standard

On a vessel of at least 1,000 HP, or in a laboratory or workshop,

the candidate repacks a valve.

The assessment is required for all OICEW endorsements regardless of any limitations for propulsion mode and/or vessel equipment.

The candidate performs the operations as follows:

  1. Isolates the component to be worked on;

  2. Uses lockout/tagout procedures;

  3. Selects the correct type of sealant or packing;

  4. Prepares sealant/packing to proper size;

  5. Cleans/prepares surfaces to receive new seal or packing;

  6. In case of mechanical seals, follows manufacturer’s instructions;

  7. Uses proper tension while tightening bolts;

  8. Opens isolation valves slowly to check for leaks;

  9. Fully tests new packing before putting unit back in service and

  10. Takes proper action to prevent safety and pollution violations.

MMA Method

In order to satisfy NVIC 17-14 Task 8.2.C , MMA students must:

  • Successfully complete MMA Assessment OICEW-8-2E Overhaul valve
