Condition Behavior Standard

On a vessel of at least 1,000 HP, or in a laboratory or workshop,

the candidate performs several electric arc welding processes.

All

The assessment is required for all OICEW endorsements regardless of any limitations for propulsion mode and/or vessel equipment.

The candidate, for each weld listed below:

  1. Prepares required pieces of metal prior to welding;

  2. Selects the proper machine settings and electrode for the size and material to be joined; and

  3. Performs a post-weld examination and/or test.

Fillet welds

  • Flat plates;
  • Vertical plates (at right angles); and
  • Horizontal [flat] pipe (end-to-end).

Groove welds

  • Flat plates;
  • Vertical plates (at right angles); and
  • Horizontal [flat] pipe (end-to-end).

MMA Method

In order to satisfy NVIC 17-14 Task 8.1.B , MMA students must:

  • Pass MMA Course EN‑2112 Machine Tool Technology
  • Successfully complete MMA Assessment OICEW-1-1C Form two steel plates using electric arc welding process
  • Successfully complete MMA Assessment OICEW-1-1B Form two steel plates using brazing process
  • Successfully complete MMA Assessment OICEW-1-1F Visual test of welded joint
  • Successfully complete MMA Assessment OICEW-1-1G Dye-penetrant test
