The candidate demonstrates or describes proper surface preparation techniques, including:

Evaluating the surface to be prepared:
a. Type of material
b. Current coating (or caulk, sealant)
c. Condition of coating (or caulk, sealant); and
d. Total surface area to be coated

Evaluating the coating (or caulk, sealant) to be used:
a. Will the coating (or caulk, sealant)bond to surface and/or current coating
b. Is a primer needed
c. Hazards of using the coating (and primer); and
d. Equipment needed to coat the surface

Evaluating the hazards involved in the area surrounding the surface to be prepared:
a. Ventilation
b. Fuel sources
c. Air intakes; and
d. Ignition sources

Evaluating the resources available to prepare the surface:
a. Tools available
b. Cleaning, stripping and etching chemicals available
c. Power sources available
d. Manpower available; and
e. Safety equipment available
- Selecting the correct tools to be used
- Using correct products to be used; and
- Preparing the surface provided so that it has a clean surface with the proper texture so that the coating will bond securely.
