ABE-B1.1 Ability to use painting, lubrication and cleaning materials and equipment

Condition Behavior Standard

On a vessel or in a laboratory or workshop, when using indicated materials and equipment,

the candidate prepares and coats surfaces in accordance with good engineering principles.


The candidate:

  1. Identifies product hazards using the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
  2. Separates and properly disposes of waste materials
  3. Properly stores paints and flammables in designated spaces
  4. Selects and applies proper paints and epoxies
  5. Uses the proper tool for spreading the coating onto the prepared surface (brush, roller, sprayer)
  6. Blocks off the area to be coated and secures ship’s equipment that may be affected
  7. Dons proper protective equipment for the area being coated; and 8. Marks off the coated area so that it is not disturbed until able to withstand the wear and tear of use.
