ABD-C2.1 Working knowledge of safe working practices and personal shipboard safety, including working over the side

Condition | Behavior | Standard |
On board ship or in a laboratory, when asked by a Qualified Assessor,
|
the candidate describes safe working practices and personal shipboard safety when working over the side.
|
The candidate’s description includes:
- Awareness of applicable company or regulatory standards;
- Knowledge of safe working practices;
- Notifying personnel as appropriate;
- Obtaining authorization from the appropriate vessel authority before beginning work over the side;
- Notifying the officer in charge of the navigational watch (OICNW);
- Confirming that all equipment that may create a hazard has been turned off and tagged accordingly;
- Confirming that the ship’s motion and weather conditions will remain within safe limits;
- Confirming that safety equipment is used and has been checked for operational integrity and suitability for the work to be performed;
- Confirming that lanyards are attached to tools (if practical);
- Confirming that safety placards in the area have been read and appropriate actions taken; and
- Notifying appropriate personnel in addition to the OICNW.
