ABE-A8.1 Safe operation of equipment, including:

Ability to use and understand basic crane, winch and hoist signals

Condition Behavior Standard

On a vessel or in a laboratory or workshop, given a hoist, other lifting equipment, hatches & doors, and a crane or winch,

the candidate assists an engineer with the operation and repair of heavy equipment in accordance with good engineering principles.


The candidate:

  1. Operates hoist and lifting equipment as directed
  2. Uses hand signals for crane, winch, and hoist commands to communicate with the crane, winch or hoist operator
  3. Operates hatches, watertight doors, ports, and related equipment
  4. Describes the limitations of ship’s equipment and not exceeding those limitations, including:

    a. Safe working load

    b. Maximum load

    c. Weather and sea conditions; and

    d. Proper use of safety practices and situational awareness; and

  5. Performs inspections and preventive maintenance as schedules dictate.

MMA Method

In order to satisfy NVIC 18-14 Task 5.2.A , MMA students must:

  • Successfully complete MMA Assessment ABDE-DE-1 Demonstrate crane and hoist signals
  • Pass MMA Course CC‑MANT Shipboard Maintenance
