ABD-C1.2 Knowledge of the following procedures and ability to rig and unrig pilot ladders, hoists, rat guards, and gangways

Condition | Behavior | Standard |
On board ship or in a laboratory, when asked by a Qualified Assessor,

the candidate describes the procedures to rig and unrig pilot ladders.
|
The candidate’s description includes:
-
Inspecting the pilot ladder:
a. No shackles, knots or splices;
b. Steps equally spaced and of equal width;
c. No crooked steps;
d. Spreaders used as step, bottom spreader is fifth step;
e. No eyes or loops on lower end; and
f. Lighting, if needed, is functioning and illuminates the deck work area and pilot ladder;

Rigging the pilot ladder:
a. No overboard discharges in the area where pilot will board;
b. Man-ropes are ready or paid out (as required by pilot);
c. Handhold stanchions or accommodation ladder are rigged;
d. Bottom rung of pilot ladder is at height; requested by pilot; and
e. Communications are set up with bridge; and

Unrig and stow pilot ladder:
a. Pilot ladder is brought up onto deck and stowed;
b. Accommodation ladder is brought up onto deck; and
c. Man ropes are stowed.
