Maintain a safe engineering watch

OICEW-A1.3 Safety precautions to be observed during a watch and immediate actions to be taken in the event of fire or accident, with particular reference to oil system

Condition Behavior Standard

On a vessel of at least 1,000 HP, on a simulator, or in a laboratory or workshop,

the candidate describes the immediate actions to be taken in the event of fire.

The assessment is required for all OICEW endorsements regardless of any limitations for propulsion mode and/or vessel equipment.

The candidate’s description includes:

  1. Determining that a fire has occurred and identifies the type and location of the fire;

  2. Activating the fire/general alarm;

  3. Notifying the bridge of the particulars of the fire;

  4. Action to contain the fire; and

  5. Action to extinguish the fire.

MMA Method

In order to satisfy NVIC 17-14 Task 1.3.B , MMA students must:

  • Pass MMA Course MT‑1111 Vessel Familiarization and Basic Safety Training
