Maintain a safe engineering watch

OICEW-A1.1 Thorough knowledge of principles to be observed in keeping an engineering watch, including:

.1 Duties associated with taking over and accepting a watch

Condition Behavior Standard

On a vessel of at least 1,000 HP at sea, on a simulator, or in a laboratory,

the candidate conducts an inspection of machinery spaces before taking over the engine room watch.


All

The assessment is required for all OICEW endorsements regardless of any limitations for propulsion mode and/or vessel equipment.

The candidate:

  1. Correctly determines, describes, and reports the status or condition of the main and auxiliary machinery (including fuel, feed water, and exhaust systems), control systems, indicating panels, and communication systems;

  2. Correctly determines, describes, and reports the status and condition of the steering system and all associated gear;

  3. Correctly determines, describes, and reports the condition of the bilges with respect to water level and contamination; and

  4. Takes proper action to prevent safety and pollution violations.

MMA Method

In order to satisfy NVIC 17-14 Task 1.1.A , MMA students must:

  • Successfully complete MMA Assessment OICEW-4-1A Inspect machinery spaces before assuming watch
