STCW Competence Knowledge, Understanding, and Proficiency

Plan and conduct a passage and determine position

OICNW-A1.03 Thorough knowledge of and ability to use nautical charts, and publications, such as sailing directions, tide tables, notices to mariners, radio navigational warnings and ships’ routing information

Condition Behavior Standard

On a vessel, or in a navigational laboratory, given a voyage of at least 1,000 nm between the port of departure and the port of arrival, and given the appropriate chart catalog,

the candidate identifies the charts needed for the voyage.


The candidate:

  1. Correctly identifies and records the names and numbers of the charts;

  2. Selects the charts with the largest scales appropriate for the area being transited; and

  3. Ensures that there is no gap in chart coverage for any part of the voyage requiring coastal navigation between departure and arrival at any port.

MMA Method

In order to satisfy NVIC 12-14 Task 1.3.B , MMA students must:

  • Successfully complete MMA Assessment OICNW-1-3B Chart selection
