Plan and conduct a passage and determine position

OICNW-A1.02 Terrestrial and coastal navigation

Ability to determine the ship’s position by use of:

.1 Landmarks

.2 Aids to navigation, including lighthouses, beacons and buoys .

3 Dead reckoning, taking into account winds, tides, currents and estimated speed

Condition Behavior Standard

On a vessel, on a simulator, or in a navigation laboratory, in an actual or simulated scenario with the vessel making at least 10 knots and encountering wind and current which sets the vessel,

the candidate plots the vessel’s position on at least two occasions not less than 30 minutes apart, calculates set and drift by vector analysis, and determines the course to steer to make the intended course.

The course to steer determined by the candidate is within ± 5° of the assessor’s solution.
