Gather materials.

Gather

• bosun’s chair
• gantline
• hardware
• safety harness
• any other required equipment

Inspect the bosun’s chair.

Ensure that:

• The material has not been chafed
• The material has not been compromised by the sun or chemicals
• Strapping is undamaged. and
• Hardware is undamaged and unworn.

Inspect the gantline.

Ensure that:

• The material has not been chafed, and
• The material has not been compromised by the sun or chemicals.

Inspect that hardware.

Ensure that all hardware is servicable.

Inspect the safety harness.

Ensure that:

• The material has not been chafed
• The material has not been compromised by the sun or chemicals
• Strapping is undamaged, and
• Hardware is undamaged and unworn.

Gather personnel who will be assisting and brief them

Discuss commands to be used and safety precautions.

Rig the gantline and bosun’s chair

Ensure that:

• For a modern bosun’s chair, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations,or
• For an old style bosun’s chair, use a gantline.

Test the rigged bosun’s chair, staging, and gantlines.

sit in and/or stand on at the lowest point of the drop and bounce in the rig.

Perform a task while aloft.

Raise chair so that feet clear the deck.

Secure themselves.

Use both hands to perform a small task.

Unrig bosun’s chair.

Free the securing and lower themselves safely to the deck.

Unrig and stow all equipment per the manufacturer’s instructions.
