Sea Term I (Deck Portion)
Course Description
Sea Term I is a common Sea Term for Freshmen. It provides an introduction to Marine Transportation, Marine Engineering, Marine Safety and Environmental Protection, International Maritime Business, and Emergency Management. All cadets will stand Bridge and Engine Room watches and receive training in basic Deck and Engine skills that will be utilized by all graduates regardless of major. All cadets will participate in maintenance of the vessel: Deck, Engine, and Stewards. Cadets will also have the opportunity to visit foreign and domestic ports.

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the following STCW elements:
- AB-D-A1.1 Ability to communicate with the officer of the watch
- AB-D-C1.1 Function and uses hoists, cranes, booms, and related equipment
- RFPNW-X1.1 Use of magnetic and gyro-compasses
- RFPNW-X1.2 Helm orders
- SA-X1.1 Basic working knowledge of maritime security terms and definitions
- SA-X1.2 Basic knowledge of international maritime security policy
- SA-X1.2 Responsibilities of Governments, companies and persons
- SA-X1.3 Basic knowledge of maritime security levels and their impact on security measures and procedures aboard ship and in port facilities
- SA-X1.4 Basic knowledge of security reporting procedures
- SA-X1.5 Basic knowledge of security-related contingency plans
- SA-X2.1 Basic knowledge of techniques used to circumvent security measures
- SA-X2.2 Basic knowledge enabling recognition of potential security threats, including elements that may relate to piracy and armed robbery
- SA-X2.3 Basic knowledge enabling recognition of weapons, dangerous substances and devices
- SA-X2.3 Awareness of the damage that weapons, dangerous substances and devices can cause
- SA-X2.4 Basic knowledge in handling security-related information and security-related communications
- SA-X3.1 Basic knowledge of training, drill and exercise requirements
- T-OPS-X2.3 Understanding of information on a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
Demonstrate proficiency in the following skills:
- ABDE-3-1A Demonstrate crane and hoist signals
