Control External Bleeding

X1.3 Understanding of immediate measures to be taken in cases of emergency, including the ability to:

  1. position casualty
  2. apply resuscitation techniques
  3. control bleeding
  4. apply appropriate measures of basic shock management
  5. apply appropriate measures in event of burns and scalds, including accidents caused by electric current
  6. rescue and transport a casualty
  7. improvise bandages and use materials in the emergency kit

Control External Bleeding

Assessed in: PE-0031 First Aid / CPR

Condition

Given a simulated victim.

Behavior

  1. Apply the emergency action steps: Check - Call - Care
  2. Apply basic precautions to reduce the risk of disease transmission when controlling bleeding.
  3. Cover the wound with a dressing, and press firmly against the wound (direct pressure).
  4. Elevate the injured area above the level of the heart if you do not suspect that the victim has a broken bone and if you can do so without causing the victim pain.
  5. Cover the dressing with a roller bandage and tie the knot directly over the wound.
  6. If bleeding does not stop-
    • Apply additional dressings and bandages.
    • Use a pressure point to squeeze the artery against the bone.
    • Call, or have someone else call, 911 or the workplace emergency number.
    • Provide care for shock.

Standard

  1. Actions are correct, in the proper sequence, and represent good first-aid practice
  2. Risk of harm to self and others is minimized
