Lesson 24: Single Phase Motors

This interactive diagram shows how the phase angle between the currents through the main and auxiliary winding effects the quality of the rotating magnetic field. You can adjust the phase shift using the slider on the axis. Note that when the waves are in phase, the field dosen’t rotate, it only oscillates, and when they are 90° out of phase, the field is perfectly uniform. Shifting reversing which wave leads makes the field rotate in the opposite direction.
