As of 0800 today the Patriot State was located at latitude 33 degrees 42 minutes north, longitude 074 degrees, 15 minutes west, heading due south on a course of 180 degrees true. We are currently due east of Charleston, South Carolina.

Captain's Log: The demands of piloting the Patriot State in restricted waters have been replaced by the more peaceful and tranquil routine of the open sea. Over all, our departure from Norfolk was predictably hectic, however, it was anything but routine.

You see, as we left the world's largest Navy base we took our place behind a fast attack nuclear submarine (SSN). This proved to be a memorable and educational experience for our cadets.

Currently, we are rolling gently on the easterly swell making excellent head way at 14.5 knots. The fathometer records 2400 fathoms of warming water beneath the keel. The light southerly wind makes the pleasant 69 degree temperature seem cooler. The warming temperatures, by the way, are the result of our entry into the Gulf Stream. The warm gulf stream also pushed the sea temperature up from 59degrees to a tepid 75 degrees.

The north easterly currents of the Gulf Stream have slowed us somewhat. While we are turning the propeller at a rate to make 16.5 knots...our actual speed of advance has slowed to 14.5 knots.

Last night, the Shellbacks, the only 'true' mariners aboard...and witness to the solemn mysteries of the ancient order of the deep, met to begin preparations for King Neptune, himself. We anticipate his grand arrival in less than two-weeks. Until then, it is hoped that the slimy pollwogs sailing with us will be found worthy for initiation into the Ancient Order of the Deep. However, only time and the sea can answer that question!
