Questions for Jaunary 11, 1998

From the Patriot State Navigator

Today we are in Norfolk Virginia taking on fuel. We will be leaving Norfolk at approximately 1600 (4:00 o'clock).

We will be steaming south with our eventual destination being the Panama Canal. The first landfall we will make will be the island of San Salvador at approximately 24 degrees north latitude and 75 degrees west longitude.

  1. What is the significance of the island of San Salvador?
  2. If we steamed at a speed of 15 knots (15 nautical miles per hour), when would we see San Salvador? Hint Each degree of latitude equals 60 nautical miles.
  3. If the ship moves 20 feet for each revolution of the propeller. How many revolutions per minute does the prop make to go 15 knots?
  4. How many revolutions will the prop make from Norfolk to San Salvador?
