Sea Term '97 Marine Safety and Environmental Protection
Mary Kate is towing this Nueston Net daily in search of tar balls and
plastics floating on the surface of all the worlds' oceans. The fine net mesh allows for
the collection of buoyant particulates found in the surface water. The particulates collected
range as small as a third of one millimeter in size. Relative quantities of plastics and other
human-produced particulate debris along the cruise track is the focus of her Sea-Term Project.
